For twenty years, the Bachelor of Applied Health Science has helped shape the future of digital health. What began as one of Canada’s pioneering health informatics programs has grown into a nationally recognized leader, evolving alongside the field to prepare graduates for a rapidly changing healthcare landscape. From foundational health systems and data literacy to advanced analytics, digital health strategy, UX design, interoperability, and AI-enabled care, the program has built a thriving learning community grounded in academic excellence, hands-on experience, and strong partnerships across healthcare, government, and industry. As we celebrate this milestone, we honour the faculty, students, alumni, and partners who have contributed to its impact and look ahead to the next two decades of leadership in designing solutions, influencing policy, and advancing equitable, technology-enabled care.
The Bachelor of Applied Health Information Science (Honours) degree prepares graduates for careers in health informatics, information management, data analysis, privacy and security, change management, quality and process improvement, and information systems across healthcare and related sectors. The program integrates clinical, technical, and management concepts which prepares students to design, implement, and evaluate data-driven solutions that support informed decision-making and organizational improvement.
The Capstone Project provides graduating fourth-year students with an opportunity to showcase the skills and knowledge they have developed throughout the BAHIS program by completing a focused project or initiative with a healthcare provider or innovation organization.
The capstone is an unpaid project that runs from May to August each year. Students may work independently or as part of a team, with each student dedicating 100 hours to the project, equivalent to approximately eight hours per week.
This is an excellent opportunity for organizations to leverage the skills and knowledge of BAHIS students to explore a new concept or advance a project that requires additional resources or focused attention, at no cost.
Each year, students take on a wide variety of exciting and rewarding projects, including but not limited to:
Clinically focused projects
Technically focused projects
Research-focused projects
The Health Informatics Association of Conestoga (HIAC) is a CSI-supported student society for students in the Bachelor of Applied Health Information Science (BAHIS) program. HIAC helps students connect, build skills, and engage with professionals in the health informatics field.
Throughout the year, HIAC hosts speaker sessions, learning circles, skills-based events, and social activities. Events include alumni and industry talks, interview preparation, LaTeX and Python workshops, SQL challenges, the annual HIACathon, and end-of-term social events such as bowling or group activities. These opportunities allow students to learn, network, showcase their skills, and build stronger connections within the BAHIS community.
